Create a metric on an asset
Metrics are created on individual assets, since they represent measurable data that is produced by, and provide insights into, the health, performance, and condition of an individual asset.
Creating a metric on an asset enlivens two possibilities:
Submit readings
Readings of the metric can be taken and submitted for analysis or simply for recording for historical purposes, and;
Trigger Tasks
Automations can be set up on the asset, establishing thresholds or rules relating to the metric and then use the metric readings to trigger the generation of a task.
For example, if the temperature of a motor exceeds a specified threshold, it may indicate overheating, which could lead to premature wear or failure of the motor bearings. By adding an Automation with thresholds that monitors the temperature readings when submitted, tasks can be generated automatically when the temperature is outside of the the predefined bounds. This allows your team to perform inspections and/or to address the issue before it escalates into a major failure.
To create a metric on an asset:
Navigate to Assets;
Filter for and then click the title of the asset that requires a metric;
Click the Metrics tab;
Click New metric;
Define the Title of the metric that will distinguish it from other metrics on the same asset (eg. "Odometer reading", "Oil check", "Temperature", etc.);
Select the Unit (reading measurement) from the options in the dropdown, or create a custom unit by typing the full name and then click the Click to create underneath the field.
If readings must be linear (a reading cannot be less than the previous reading), click the checkbox to mandate it;
If readings will be entered on an ad-hoc basic (ie. not on a set schedule), click the checkbox, otherwise;
If readings are usually taken on a pre-defined schedule then define the quantity and the interval by inserting a number and selecting the interval type from the dropdown;
TIP: Nominating the usual interval will not prevent users from entering readings on an ad-hoc basis; it is merely so that users can be advised of when an updated reading should be taken. But, whenever a reading is taken, the next due will reset based on the usual interval.
Enter the most recent reading, if known;
Stipulate when the most recent reading was taken, or leave blank to use the current time;
Click Confirm.
Modify a metric on an asset
To modify a metric on an asset:
Navigate to Assets;
Filter for and then click the title of the asset that is to be edited;
Click the Metrics tab;
Click the three-dot menu to the right of the metric that is to be edited;
Click Edit metric;
Make the necessary modifications;
NOTE: Some fields may not be editable, by design.
Click Confirm.
Delete or archive a metric
Metrics on assets can only be deleted up until the point at which a reading for that metric has been entered. Therefore, after being used at least once, metrics can only be archived.
To delete a metric on an asset:
Navigate to Assets;
Filter for and then click the title of the asset that is to be edited;
Click the Metrics tab;
Click the three-dot menu to the right of the metric that is to be edited;
Click Edit metric;
Click Delete.
To archive a metric on an asset:
Navigate to Assets;
Filter for and then click the title of the asset that is to be edited;
Click the Metrics tab;
Click the three-dot menu to the right of the metric that is to be edited;
Click Edit metric;
Click Archive.
